Hop Gemini to Claude
Chat Transfer hops Gemini to Claude in Chrome by pasting a wrapped handoff from the open Gemini thread on gemini.google.com into Claude’s composer at claude.ai/new locally — Full, Last N, or last assistant — with Gemini “thinking” left out, without account migration, and without silent-send.
Version 0.4.0 is live on the Chrome Web Store. Soft Auto-Send stays opt-in and default off. Preferences live in chrome.storage.local. Add to Chrome
What “hop Gemini to Claude” means here
People search “hop Gemini to Claude,” “move a Gemini chat to Claude,” or “continue a Gemini conversation in Claude” for two different jobs. Chat Transfer only does the first:
| Job | What moves | Chat Transfer |
|---|---|---|
| Hop current thread | The Gemini chat you have open on gemini.google.com: Full, Last N, or last assistant → Claude composer at claude.ai/new | Yes. Copy and export stay on this device too |
| Full-account migration | Gemini Gems, saved info, and Google account history — or Claude Projects, artifacts, and memory | No |
| Keep two sites in sync | An ongoing mirror after the hop, including TransferLLM-style account sync | No. One hop does not watch later messages |
| Send | Who presses Send on Claude | Paste never silent-sends. Soft Auto-Send is opt-in, default off, and asks once |
This is the reverse of Hop Claude to Gemini. Same extension, same local paste; this page starts on Gemini and lands in Claude. Sibling Gemini hops: Hop Gemini to ChatGPT and Hop Gemini to Grok. Other routes into Claude: Hop Grok to Claude and Hop a ChatGPT chat to Claude.
Gemini → Claude handoff: what crosses, what stays
This table is specific to the Gemini-to-Claude direction. It comes from how the Chat Transfer Gemini adapter filters the page and how the Claude land step writes the paste — not from either vendor’s docs.
| On the Gemini page | In the Claude paste | What to do about it |
|---|---|---|
Your prompts (user-query) and Gemini answers (model-response) | Kept, in order, as User / Assistant turns | Pick Full, Last N, or last assistant |
| “Show thinking” / thoughts panel | Skipped (model-thoughts, thoughts-container) | Claude reasons fresh; it does not inherit Gemini’s draft reasoning |
| Sources, Google it, Double-check, Export to Docs, Listen, Share buttons | Dropped as page chrome | If a citation only lives behind Gemini’s Sources control, paste the URLs you need into Claude yourself |
| A Gem’s custom instructions | Only if that instruction panel is in the DOM and Keep system prompt is on | The Gem is not rebuilt in Claude; a Claude Project with your own instructions is the closest match, set up by you |
| Canvas, uploaded images, files | Not rebuilt. A visible file name may become an [attachment not exported: …] note; other attachments can drop out with no note | Check the preview, and re-upload the file in Claude if it matters |
| Code blocks | Fenced Markdown, language tag when Gemini shows one | Nothing — headings and fences keep their order |
| Long thread (over about 12k characters) | Short Last N (or compact) paste + full .md download | Attach the .md in Claude if you need the whole history |
Where the Gemini source is read, and where Claude lands
Open the Gemini thread you want to continue — a chat on https://gemini.google.com/, not an empty new chat. The Gemini adapter matches gemini.google.com and the legacy bard.google.com host. Extract reads visible turns from public hooks such as user-query / model-response (and related data-test-id / data-testid text); hashed Angular class names are not the primary hooks. A hop toward Claude lands on https://claude.ai/new, not inside an existing Claude conversation and not inside a Claude Project.
Claude’s composer is a ProseMirror contenteditable box. Chat Transfer writes the hop with DOM events (execCommand('insertText') first, then input events, then a plain-text fallback). It does not call Claude page-world editor APIs. If Claude’s composer already holds a stale draft, paste land best-effort clears it once, then pastes the exact hop preview. If the box is empty after land, paste the hop backup yourself. Destination Send is Claude’s control (Send Message / send-button), never anything on the Gemini tab.
Steps: Gemini → Claude in Chrome
- Add Chat Transfer from the Chrome Web Store (0.4.0).
- Open the Gemini chat you want to continue in Claude (a thread on gemini.google.com, not an empty new chat). Wait until Gemini’s last reply has finished streaming — an unfinished reply can be skipped.
- Open the popup or side panel → pick a hop payload (Full, Last N, or last assistant) → optionally pick a hop reason (Continue, Second opinion, Review, Rate limit) → choose Open target / hop toward Claude.
- Claude’s new-chat page (
https://claude.ai/new) gets a best-effort paste into the composer. If the box is empty, paste the hop backup yourself — Soft Auto-Send does not run on a failed land. - You click Send on Claude — unless Soft Auto-Send is on (see below).
Extract runs when you open the popup or side panel, refresh it, hop, Copy, or Export — not in the background while you browse. The wrapped hop names Gemini as the source (“The following is a transcript from Gemini…”) and, when the tab URL is http(s), adds a Source: line with query, hash, and credentials stripped. Copy and Export stay unwrapped. Longer install walkthrough: How to use.
Optional Also open can open one more Site with the same hop preview. From Gemini with Claude selected, that extra Site is ChatGPT (first remaining id in Claude → ChatGPT → Gemini → Grok after excluding the source and the primary). You still press Send on each destination. There is no third destination.
Which payload for which Gemini → Claude job
The payload choice changes what Claude receives. It does not migrate the Gemini account. Copy and Export stay unwrapped and follow their own export controls.
| Job | Payload | Hop reason |
|---|---|---|
| Gemini drafted it; you want Claude to keep writing | Full (or Last N if the thread is long) | Continue (default) |
| Check a Gemini answer before you trust it | Last assistant | Second opinion |
| Have Claude critique a plan or code Gemini wrote | Last N (start at 4 or 8) | Review |
| Gemini slowed down or hit a limit mid-task | Last N (N starts at 10; presets 4 / 8 / 16) | Rate limit |
Hop reason only changes the wrapper opening line. Include title in wrapper is off by default; when on, the hop adds a Title: line from the Gemini tab. Over about 12k characters, Claude’s composer gets a short Last N (or compact) paste and the full Markdown downloads as a .md so a cut is not silent. See Overflow paste.
Soft Auto-Send stays opt-in (default off)
A hop paste into Claude does not silent-send. Soft Auto-Send is opt-in (hopSoftAutoSend in chrome.storage.local, default off). After a successful paste it asks once: “Send this hop now?” Confirm presses Claude Send once; Cancel leaves the paste; a failed paste never asks. No upgrade turns the box on for existing installs. Full walkthrough: Soft Auto-Send. Same facts as the privacy policy.
Local only — chrome.storage, no backend
Chat Transfer is a local-only Chrome extension. Settings (Demo mode, Keep system prompt, hop payload, last-used target, Soft Auto-Send) stay in on-device chrome.storage.local. There is no Chat Transfer backend; the marketing site does not receive hop text. Host access is only Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Grok domains — including gemini.google.com, bard.google.com, and claude.ai. Version 0.4.0 also keeps a local Library (archive → search → continue on this device); this hop page is the walkthrough when you want the open Gemini thread in Claude now.
When not to use a hop
- You need Gemini canvases, images, or files re-attached in Claude — hop does not rebuild binaries, and some attachments drop out without a note.
- You want a Gem turned into a Claude Project, or Gemini saved info copied into Claude memory — hop does not migrate those objects.
- You want the paste to land inside an existing Claude thread — Open target opens
https://claude.ai/new. - You need an ongoing sync between Google and Anthropic accounts — see Hop vs migration.
FAQ
Can I hop Gemini to Claude without migrating my account?
Yes. Chat Transfer hops the open Gemini thread into Claude’s composer on this device. It does not move accounts, Gems, saved info, Projects, or later messages.
Does Gemini’s “thinking” end up in Claude?
No. Thought containers (model-thoughts, thoughts-container) are skipped, so only Gemini’s visible answers paste as assistant turns.
Does hopping Gemini to Claude silent-send?
No. Paste never silent-sends. Soft Auto-Send is opt-in, default off, and asks once after a successful paste.
What if Gemini’s last reply is missing from the hop?
The Gemini adapter skips turns whose text comes back empty, so a reply that is still streaming or shows only a thoughts panel can simply be absent from the paste. Let Gemini finish, check the preview, then hop again before you send on Claude.
