Hop Grok to Claude

Chat Transfer hops Grok to Claude in Chrome by pasting a wrapped handoff from the open Grok thread into Claude’s composer at claude.ai/new locally — Full, Last N, or last assistant — without account migration and without silent-send.

Version 0.4.0 is live on the Chrome Web Store. Soft Auto-Send stays opt-in and default off. Preferences live in chrome.storage.local. 0.4.0 also ships a local Library (archive → search → continue on this device); that is the longer-lived product direction, and this hop guide stays valid. Add to Chrome

What “hop Grok to Claude” means here

People search “hop Grok to Claude,” “transfer Grok chat to Claude,” or “continue Grok thread in Claude” for two different jobs. Chat Transfer only does the first:

Hop the open Grok thread vs full-account migration

The reverse walkthrough is Hop Claude to Grok. Same extension, same local paste; this page starts on Grok and lands in Claude. Grok into ChatGPT: Hop Grok to ChatGPT. ChatGPT into Claude: Hop a ChatGPT chat to Claude.

Hop vs copy-paste (what you actually get)

A hop is local continue — export/import style continue — not a prettier clipboard. This is the difference against highlighting Grok yourself and pasting into Claude:

Where the Grok source is read, and where Claude lands

Open the Grok thread you want to continue — usually on https://grok.com/, not an empty new chat. The Grok adapter also detects grok.x.ai and x.com / twitter.com paths under /i/grok when you are already on those pages, so Copy / Export / hop from that tab can still read the open thread. A hop toward Claude still lands on https://claude.ai/new, not inside an existing Claude conversation and not inside an X Grok drawer.

The hop from Grok reads visible turns on the page, not page-world editor APIs. Grok’s composer is a TipTap / ProseMirror box when you are writing there; that box is not the extract source. Destination Send is Claude’s control (Send Message / send-button), never Grok’s grokSendButton.

Claude’s composer is a ProseMirror contenteditable box. Chat Transfer writes the hop with DOM events (execCommand('insertText') first, then input events, then a plain-text fallback). It does not call Claude page-world editor APIs. If the box is empty after land, paste the hop backup yourself. Before inject, if Claude’s composer already has a stale draft, paste land best-effort clears once, then pastes the exact hop preview.

Steps: Grok → Claude in Chrome

  1. Add Chat Transfer from the Chrome Web Store (0.4.0).
  2. Open the Grok chat you want to continue in Claude (a thread on grok.com or another detected Grok surface, not an empty new chat).
  3. Open the popup or side panel → pick a hop payload (Full, Last N, or last assistant) → optionally pick a hop reason (Continue, Second opinion, Review, Rate limit) → choose Open target / hop toward Claude (or the hop-to-last-used shortcut if you bound Claude last).
  4. Claude’s new-chat page (https://claude.ai/new) gets a best-effort paste into the composer. If the box is empty, paste the hop backup yourself — Soft Auto-Send does not run on a failed land.
  5. You click Send on Claude — unless Soft Auto-Send is on (see below).

Extract runs only when you hop, Copy, or Export. Chat Transfer does not scrape Grok in the background. Longer install walkthrough: How to use.

Optional Also open can open one more Site with the same hop preview. From Grok with Claude selected, that extra Site is ChatGPT (first remaining id in Claude → ChatGPT → Gemini → Grok after excluding source and primary). Status still says you need to press Send on each destination. There is no third destination.

What the Grok extract actually keeps

Grok’s page mixes turns with chrome and optional thought panels. Chat Transfer reads the open thread from public turn markers, then filters:

Keep system prompt only includes a system turn when that panel is currently in the DOM. Checking the box does not invent custom instructions. Code in a Grok turn walks the chosen body in child order: headings become ATX, a pre or one code shell becomes a fence, and prose stays between them. An empty walk, or one that drops most of the visible text, keeps innerText. Headings and fences are not zipped by index.

When to use Full, Last N, or last assistant

These three radios change what Claude receives. They do not migrate the Grok account. Hop from turn (off by default) can further keep only turns from N through the end of the keep-system list; the payload radios stay and do not change that filter. Copy and Export stay the full unwrapped transcript.

Payload choice for a Grok → Claude hop
PayloadUse this whenSkip this when
FullThe visible Grok thread is the whole brief you want Claude to continue — early constraints, later answers, and the last user askThe thread is long enough to overflow (~12k characters) and you only need recent context
Last NThe Grok thread is long and Claude only needs the recent slice. N starts at 10. Presets set 4, 8, or 16The first user brief or an early constraint still matters and sits outside N
Last assistantYou want Claude to react to Grok’s last answer alone — typical for Second opinion or ReviewClaude needs the user asks that produced that answer

Hop reason only changes the wrapper opening line. Continue (default) asks Claude to absorb the transcript and continue from the last turn. Second opinion asks for an independent second opinion. Review asks Claude to review the last turn or plan. Rate limit notes that Grok hit a rate limit or slowdown and asks Claude to continue on this Site. Copy and Export never add that wrapper.

Hop / Copy / Export / Overflow: Hop pastes the wrapped preview. Copy puts the unwrapped transcript on the clipboard. Export downloads Markdown on this device (same unwrapped transcript as Copy). Over about 12k characters, Claude’s composer gets a short Last N (or compact) paste and the full Markdown downloads as a .md so a cut is not silent. See Overflow paste.

Soft Auto-Send stays opt-in (default off)

A hop paste into Claude does not silent-send. Soft Auto-Send is opt-in (hopSoftAutoSend in chrome.storage.local, default off). After a successful paste it asks once: “Send this hop now?” Confirm presses Claude Send once; Cancel leaves the paste; a failed paste never asks. There is no upgrade path that turns the box on for existing installs. Full walkthrough: Soft Auto-Send. Same facts as the privacy policy (2026-10-09).

When the setting is on, Confirm is one best-effort press — not a retry loop. If Send is not pressable on the first look, Chat Transfer polls briefly (about two seconds) before one click; if that still misses, it may dispatch one plain Enter on the composer. That is the whole press budget for that hop. Try attach full.md can put a file in the box; that path still never clicks Send.

Local only — chrome.storage, no backend

Chat Transfer is a local-only Chrome extension. Settings (Demo mode, Keep system prompt, hop payload, last-used target, Soft Auto-Send) stay in on-device chrome.storage.local. There is no Chat Transfer backend; the marketing site does not receive hop text. Host access is only Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Grok domains — including claude.ai, grok.com, grok.x.ai, and x.com/i/grok. Soft Auto-Send adds no host_permissions and no downloads permission.

Version 0.4.0 also keeps a local Library: archive a thread, search it, and continue from that archive on this device (CT Memory in chrome.storage / IndexedDB; optional folder index). That is the product direction for long-lived context — see Search Grok history locally. This hop page is still the right walkthrough when you want the open Grok thread pasted into Claude now. Library archives stay on-device; hop still has no Chat Transfer backend.

This is still “this thread,” not a full-account move. Grok history and memories stay on Grok. Claude Projects, artifacts, and memories stay on Claude. A Grok→Claude hop only continues the open chat you asked to transfer.

When not to use a hop

FAQ

Can I hop Grok to Claude without migrating my account?

Yes. Chat Transfer hops the open Grok thread into Claude’s composer on this device. It does not move accounts, memories, Projects, artifacts, or later messages.

Does hopping Grok to Claude silent-send?

No. Paste never silent-sends. Soft Auto-Send is opt-in, default off, and asks once after a successful paste. It may press Claude Send only after you confirm — never Grok Send on the source tab.

Is this different from hopping Grok to ChatGPT?

Same extension and local paste model. Source is Grok; destination is Claude at claude.ai/new. Soft Auto-Send and payload choices (Full / Last N / last assistant) are shared. See the Grok → ChatGPT guide for that land URL.

Where does the Claude hop land?

Open target opens https://claude.ai/new and pastes there. It does not append into an existing Claude conversation, and it does not keep the two threads in sync after you send.

What if Grok’s last reply looks empty in the hop?

Do not assume the hop invented it. Empty-assistant honesty surfaces when an assistant turn is already in the extract list but its trimmed body is empty. Check the Grok page (still-streaming reply, thought-only chrome, or a missed message body) before you send on Claude.
